Climate Change Class for all employees at Hearst Magazines Japan.

We held a Climate Change Class for all employees at Hearst Magazines Japan. There were over 280 people who participated in the ZOOM lesson.

Hearst Magazines has started to print and bind books using green power energy from March 1, 2023. In addition to that, by 2026, they aim to offer their clients an advertising plan that virtually eliminates greenhouse gas emissions. They have also established an Environmental Policy, which states: “Raising environmental awareness: We will work to raise environmental awareness through environmental education and awareness activities for all employees.”

We received many positive messages from those who attended the class :

・We need to continuously deliver the news as a media. It was very useful for me to have the general knowledge required as a journalist.

・Despite Japan’s high carbon dioxide emissions, there is not a sense of crisis to that extent. I felt that we should not take it as someone else’s problem, but take action ourselves and use the media to communicate the situation to others.

・I was able to deepen my understanding of the global damage caused by climate change by learning specific data.

・I was able to understand the issues well, and it was a good opportunity for me to think about what I should do to help solve the problem of climate change.

・I now understand the seriousness of global warming, and that I need to do what I can to stop the 1.5°C rise.

・With the tipping point approaching, what can we do as media? I felt once again that we should introduce even small things.

・I always thought that typhoons, landslides, and other disasters have always been a part of Japan’s history, but this class made me realize that climate change is making these natural disasters even bigger and more frequent.

・I have learned the seriousness of global warming and the gap in awareness between Japan and the rest of the world. It made me think about the responsibility of the media.
