Announcement: New structure of Media is Hope

Media is Hope was founded in April 2021 as a voluntary organization. With all the support, we became a general incorporated association in June 2022.

We challenged crowdfunding and received 3,929,000 yen in support from 430 people, which reached our second goal and we started full-scale activities as an organization.

The crowdfunding was used to compensate the members who have continued to support us as volunteers, to cover the initial costs of establishing the general incorporated association, and to cover personnel costs, event expenses, and operating costs until we receive a grant as an organization.

Thanks to all of your support, Media is Hope has come this far. Thank you so much for your support and belief in our activities.

About the future of Media is Hope

With the incorporation of the company, co-creation with more and more stakeholders is accelerating day by day. We have entered a new phase that involves a great deal of social responsibility in terms of support and collaboration with the media, experts, practitioners, environmental NGOs, and others directly involved in our work. In addition to that, it has become difficult to manage more than 50 diverse members at the same time, which has been one of our strengths, and we have come to believe that it is necessary to create a system that allows more people to participate, not only on a voluntary basis.

Therefore, Media is Hope will take a new start in 2023 and dissolve the voluntary structure that has supported so much of our work. In 2023, we will step up to “activities with paid staff only” in order to work toward essential solutions to the problem of climate change.

We will create a system that allows people to participate in Media is Hope as viewers and readers in a more flat and broad-based manner, rather than the core voluntary involvement that has been the norm up to now.

We hope that you will join us at Media is Hope in creating a new system. We will announce details on how to participate here as well.

Once again, Media is Hope will make a new start with five members: two co-representative directors, one auditor/advisor, one in charge of overseas media, and one in charge of design and visuals.

We are now moving forward with our goal of “cross-media collaboration on the theme of climate change” with the cooperation of many stakeholders, including media representatives. This kind of support and encouragement from the general public to the media is a rare initiative, not only in Japan but also in the world. Everything will be a new challenge, but through repeated trial and error, we will work together with everyone to achieve a sustainable and better society by seeking essential solutions to the climate change issues.

And most recently, we have been working with the media in preparation for the G7. In order to make the climate crisis a common awareness in Japan, I expect that there will be an increase in the transmission from various media such as TV, newspapers, magazines, and online media, drawing on milestones, different approaches, news making, and in-depth articles that connect the problems and the solutions.

We will also be back with an upgrade of our Instagram and other information transmission, and we plan to launch our website again around the same time as G7, in May, so please look forward to it!

Thanks to all of your support, the foundation of Media is Hope has been built. As a major media support, we held a symposium to build momentum for future climate change reporting with the United Nations Information Center and 11 media outlets at the “1.5°C Commitment Support Press Conference”, pledging further co-creation relationships and establishing a new scheme.

Once again, it is your support and encouragement that has made Media is Hope possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Currently, we are operating with grants from foundations, corporations, and environmental funds, but we will take on the challenge of establishing a scheme for further media support, which will create a virtuous circle for both the media and the sustainability of the organization.

Now, we would like to do our best and ask for your continued support!
