[Sustainable Cosmetics Awards 2025: Awards Ceremony] Co-Lead/Director Nishida Served as the Moderator for the Panel Discussion!

What is the Sustainable Cosmetics Award?

It is an award that honors “cosmetics good for both people and the planet”—the first and only award in Japan to establish evaluation and screening criteria for the cosmetics and fine toiletries sectors based on an SDGs perspective.

Initiated by a group of volunteers serving as ambassadors for the Ministry of the Environment’s “Connect and Support Forests, Villages, Rivers, and Seas Project,” the award launched in 2019 as a multifaceted, neutral, and impartial initiative. It features a panel of judges comprising experts from diverse fields—including the environment, media, and cosmetics—while also appointing students engaged in environmental activities to serve as both secretariat staff and judges. Based on evaluation criteria grounded in the SDGs, the initiative promotes sustainability in cosmetics by evaluating, judging, and recognizing products across their entire lifecycle—from ingredients to raw material production, manufacturing, sales, distribution, consumption, and disposal.

For the panel discussion, we have formulated questions based on each theme.

[Creators]: “Why did you ‘deliberately’ choose sustainability, and why do you continue to do so today?”

[Retailers]: “How will retail spaces (stores and online) have changed by 2030? How do you want to transform them leading up to 2030?”

[Communicators]: “In an era where information shapes values, can the media make sustainability a ‘social norm’?”

This year marks a milestone, with just five years remaining until the 2030 deadline. This panel discussion was organized as an opportunity for participants to share their perspectives on the current state of sustainable cosmetics and their outlook for 2030, and to renew our commitment to this cause.

We believe that the cosmetics industry—a sector known for its glamour—promoting sustainability sends a powerful message to society. As Media is Hope, we hope to contribute to spreading this momentum throughout society by collaborating in various ways moving forward.
